Universal Upgrades begin when "internal technology" can provide sentient beings new capabilities that they are unlikely to develop in natural ways. Examples of internal technology are implants or prostheses. This type of upgrade is not the same as medical internal technology which is designed to restore the natural capabilities. Rather, it represents the beginning of an upgrade process that alters civilizations in a fundamental manner. The universal upgrade is a complex procedure that can take several years to complete. The process can be classified in two categories that are complete success and partial failure.

It's similar to the way that resort upgrades function at Disney and Universal. In the case of WDW these upgrades are usually due to operational needs such as overbooking or room availability. In the case of Universal is involved, it may be a case of moving guests to a different resort that is open. Jewels can be used to enhance weapons, armor or accessories. They give varying stat bonuses and secondary effects based on the gemstone and reagent used to make them. Jewels can be made using a jewelry table by using 5 of the same reagent type and one gem to create the jewel of an upper or lower tier. This is similar to upgrading a stone on a gemcrafting desk.

Jewel tiers are determined by the number of modifiers they possess and higher-tier jewels have more modifiers than lower-tier ones. Like other DM mechanics, gems can help to keep items feeling special to their owners. Jewels provide a variety of upgrade options that let players customize and discover the most appropriate combination for their needs. They can upgrade their equipment with new gems if they feel the existing set is no longer suitable.

This window will show the upgrade level, any upgrade type bonus (such as Tech Points or Quality Chance) and the cost of the upgrade. The upgrader will require the user to take the item to the upgrader, who will explain how to upgrade the item. The player must then supply the correct currency and, if needed additional materials. These requirements are determined by the level of the item. Weapons have more stringent requirements as in comparison to armor.

In addition to the necessary upgrade components, a lot of upgrade recipes also have an  acceptable materials list. This list contains the other components of an upgrade that can be used to upgrade an item. It also includes an indicator that tells you whether or not it has a guarantee of a boost. This is important to know because the value of an upgraded item may differ significantly based on the  extras it comes with, with properly rolling gear much more valuable than non-upgraded versions.

The list of upgrade types that require crests or valorstones will be displayed in a separate list below the main list. The number of crests and the valorstones required will depend on the level of the item. Upgrades to weapons require the most Valorstones.
